Monday's Curious Confessions

It's always interesting to hear others' oddities and weird/absurd facts, don't you think?  I'm convinced that it reminds us of our sheer humanity and less-than-perfection.   For that very reason, and since it's Monday and we all need to wake up, I've decided it's curious confession time.

Are you ready?  I'll start:
I sleep with my eyes open.  OK, not all the way open, probably more like halfway open, but open nonetheless.  My mom and sister do it too, so I've been a witness to the fact that it can be pretty darn creepy to anyone who happens to see it.
My little oddity also leads to some strange dreams and what I've now dubbed "freak outs."  Because my eyes are still working while I'm sleeping, it means I can see my surroundings while I dream.  Most of the night it doesn't affect me, but sometimes, well, it scares the crap out of me.  I've jumped out of bed and across the room, swung at imaginary scary things in front of me and patted Josh down because I thought he was covered in spiders.
Obviously, it's not a great experience for Josh when he wakes up during one of my episodes.  So, in order to save us both from a heart attack, I've started wearing a sleep mask to bed.  I feel sort of silly wearing it, and it's not the most comfortable thing in the world, but it's been helping.

Does anyone else wear a mask to sleep?  Do you have any pointers or know of any type of sleep mask that's comfier than others?  Chime in and let me know!
It's also your turn to fill us all in on your very own curious confessions.  Either respond in the comments, or email me and I can share your story in another post.  Sounds fun right?  Also, ummm, keep your confession PG mmmkay?

Have a good Monday!

  1. That is so funny. I've never heard of someone sleeping with their eyes open and it effecting their dreams. Hmmmm. Something about me. I might be the only adult who's favorite ice cream is bubblegum flavor. I prefer it to be blue with colored gumballs inside. And the gross part is that since they always leave it on top of the cone (and who wants to eat a dry cone after they're done with their ice cream?) I always push it down into the cone with my finger. Luckily my kids haven't noticed but my husband thinks I'm disgusting.

    1. Rachael you are totally not alone in that! My dear husband, at the age of 30, will only eat ice cream if it's bubble gum, and he loves the blue too! He saves the gum for the end, and I tease him endlessly, but I'm sure he will love hearing that there's at least one other person who loves bubblegum ice cream :)

    2. Ha ha, too funny! I haven't thought of bubblegum ice cream in years! And no shame in pushing it down with your fingers. I would sooo do the same thing! :) You and Kelli's husband must be kids at heart, which is always a good thing!

  2. My best friend growing up, her older brother used to sleep with his eyes open. Used to scare me because I had never seen it before and I totally thought he was trying to trick us into thinking he was asleep!

  3. I don't wear a sleep mask but I love sleeping with my head underneath a pillow. I sometimes suffer from Sleep paralysis. it's comfortable to be to have a pillow sandwich between my head. LOL my fiance thought it was weird when we first started dating and now it thinks its comfy too. He doesn't sleep like that all the time but he bury his head sometimes under mine with me.

    1. How do you breathe??!? If I slept next to someone who did that, I wouldn't be able to sleep because I'd be checking their breathing all night. ;)

  4. I can totally relate! I don't sleep with my eyes open all night but I do open them while I'm sleeping and sometimes I incorporate things I see when I'm sleeping into my dreams. It's so bad I can't sleep with clutter or dresser drawers open because I will dream they're intruders or something odd. My poor husband has been accosted many a times due to intruder or stray horse that is really a laundry basket

    1. That's exactly what I do! My sunburst mirror turned into a scary monster head with red eyes because it was reflecting the red light of our space heater. So scary! :) A stray horse laundry basket, now that's a good one!

  5. Oh wow. That is unusual. Unfortunately, I don't have any pointers on sleep masks but that seems like a good solution. I have a circulation problem called Raynaud's Disease where the tips of my fingers and toes turn cold and white. And it can happen anywhere - at my house, the grocery store. It's mainly just an uncomfortable nuisance. But my mom and sister have it too. Ah genetics!

    1. My grandfather's hands used to turn cold and white. I wonder if that's the same thing? Crazy!

  6. My husband sleeps with one of his eyes a bit open, too! So creepy!! I've tried to capture it in a photo, but it really just doesn't do it justice. I hope your sleep mask starts to help with those episodes... scary!

My curious confession... I drink hot chocolate almost EVERY night after dinner!! Maybe not curious for other chocolate-lovers out there!

  7. I wear an eye mask evey night and have for over 6 years! I LOVE it. I need total darkness to sleep... I can't sleep without it! I invest in a good one, the kind that have 'pockets' for your eyes so it doesn't hit my eyelids.

    1. Where do you get them? I found a cheap one at target during the holidays, but it's not comfortable at all. I don't even know where to look for a good one!

  8. Emily! I sleep with my eyes 1/2 way open too! I remember being on a bus to Young Life camp in junior high and waking up with like 20 people all gathered around and staring at me! Carter does it too! Sooooo funny! :)

  9. I've always thought that would be really handy oddity for grade school ;)

Since I was a kid, totally naturally I like to flip through magazines (only) backwards. Not books.

    1. OMG, I do that too!!! I always immediately start flipping from the back of the magazine. Too funny!

  10. You just need to find the right mask!!! I have lived in situation where I share a SMALL room with 5 other females, all on different working schedules - and while we did have the lights off completely a good 14 hours of the day, I loooove my sleep, and an eye mask (and ear plugs...) saved me. I could pass out and sleep through anything. My favorite eye mask is actually one I just picked up at TJ Maxx for no more than 5 or 6 bucks. Make sure it is big enough to cover your eyes and not let a bunch of light in by your nose. Make sure it doesn't press down on your eyes because that will just make you uncomfortable. And make sure it has a comfortable band - some of the cheap ones are just skinny elastics, and those aren't comfy at all. Now a days, I just wear one if I take a nap in the middle of the day, but they definitely work!

  11. I only wear a mask on the plane. My son used to sleep with one half open when he was little - it really did freak us out - love this post.

  12. Emily, I struggle with insomnia and I'm an extremely light sleeper. Also, b/c of my chronic pain condition, I always go to bed earlier than my husband. I was waking up as soon as he opened the door to our room at night, so I ordered an eye mask off Amazon. It's by Lewis & Clark and it's so super soft and works great at keeping light out. I HIGHLY recommend it. I don't remember price but it was definitely less than $20 b/c I'm cheap...I mean frugal...lol :0)

  13. Oh my!! I'll have to think about it and let you know if I have any really funny oddities!

Those dreams must be so intense! I sometimes have dreams so real that I'll actually cry while crying in a dream!

  14. I've totally done that before! It's always nice to wake up from a sad/bad dream and realize it was only a dream and didn't happen. :)

  15. Hahaha my husband also sleeps with his eyes half way shut. I've never used a sleep mask but my mom sometimes does ;) I don't think there's anything weird about my sleeping habits, other than I have repeated dreams in which I can control the outcome, breaks never work when I'm in a car, and I can always, always fly ;)

  16. I LOVE this idea of curious confessions! That's so crazy (and scary!) that you can see your surroundings in your dreams. ive never used a sleeping mask so I can't help you there unfortunately :(
Hmm... I don't know if I have as cool of a curious confession...one thing is that i am really superstitous... like in conversation if i or someone else says knock on wood- i frantically look for wood to knock on.. or something wood like. Totally makes me look like a maniac!

  17. I myself use a sleep mask for the blinds don't block out enough sun to suit me. This Dream Zone Sleep mask is the one my mama got me & I still love it years later. The head strap adjusts & it a bit more padding in the under eye area making it cushy against the skin but also blocking any light from coming from the bottom.
